Agents Reference
33 autonomous AI specialists. Each one encodes deep domain expertise so you get senior-level output without senior-level effort.
Public preview: free to install. The plugin is open source (MIT) and the orchestrator is source-available (FSL-1.1). Interfaces may change.
How Agents Work
Agents are autonomous specialists that Claude Code delegates to when it recognizes a task matches an agent's expertise. You don't need to invoke them directly — Claude reads your prompt, picks the right agent, and routes your request.
But you can invoke them directly through commands like /nxtg-forge:feature (which orchestrates Planner → Builder → Testing → Guardian) or through the /nxtg-forge:agent-assign command.

Agent Selection Guide
"I want to build something" → Planner designs it, Builder implements it, Guardian validates it
"Something is broken" → Is production down RIGHT NOW? → Incident Commander (triage, rollback, coordination) → Need to understand why something failed? → Detective (root cause analysis, health diagnosis) → Tests are failing? → Testing (flaky test diagnosis, coverage gaps)
"Is my code good?" → Guardian for pre-commit quality gates, Security for deep vulnerability audits, Crucible Detective for test quality forensics
"I need to launch this product" → Product Strategist for positioning, Growth Engine for distribution, Wordsmith for copy
"Make it faster / cleaner / better" → Performance for speed, Refactor for structure, Master Architect for design
Which Quality Agent Do I Use?
The most common confusion: Detective, Guardian, Security, and Compliance all touch "quality." Here's when to use each:
| Agent | Speed | Depth | Use When | What It Finds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Detective | Fast (~30s) | Broad (5 dimensions) | Start of session, "what's the health of this project?" | Overview: test gaps, stale docs, architecture smells, security surface |
| Guardian | Medium (~1-2 min) | Medium (tests + types + lint + security) | Before committing or pushing code | Pre-ship gate: test failures, type errors, lint violations, basic security |
| Security | Slow (~5-10 min) | Deep (OWASP-focused) | Before a release, after auth changes, during security audits | Deep: CVEs, hardcoded secrets, auth flow weaknesses, injection vectors |
| Compliance | Medium (~2 min) | Focused (legal/regulatory) | Before release, after adding dependencies | Legal: license conflicts, GDPR violations, WCAG accessibility gaps |
| Crucible Detective | Slow (~5 min) | Forensic (test quality only) | When tests pass but software doesn't work | Fraud: hollow assertions, coverage gaming, mock proliferation |
The relationship: Guardian spawns Security and Testing as parallel subagents during quality gates. Detective spawns Testing, Security, Docs, and Performance for health checks. They're a hierarchy, not competitors.
Quick rule: Daily work → Guardian. Pre-release → Security + Compliance. Project health → Detective. Test fraud suspicion → Crucible.

| Builder | Sonnet | Implements production-ready code from plans with tests and type safety |
| Guardian | Sonnet | Runs quality gates — tests, security, lint — before code ships |
| Orchestrator | Opus | The conductor. Coordinates all agents through the 4-option command center |
Domain Specialists
Deep expertise in specific engineering domains. Each one knows the patterns, anti-patterns, and best practices of its field.

How Agents Gain Superpowers at Each Level
L1: Vibe Coder (Plugin Only)
All 33 agents work at L1. They read your codebase, use Claude Code's tools (Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Glob, Grep), and produce results. No additional setup.
L2: Pro Builder (+ Orchestrator)
Agents that reference orchestrator MCP tools gain coordination capabilities:
- Task awareness: Agents check what's been assigned, what's in progress, what's blocked
- Knowledge persistence: Learnings from one session inform the next (
forge_capture_knowledge/forge_get_knowledge) - Drift detection: Work stays aligned with your project vision (
forge_check_drift) - Cross-agent coordination: The Orchestrator agent manages handoffs between specialists
L3: Ship Lord (+ Dashboard)
Agent activity becomes visual:
- Task boards show what each agent is working on
- Health scores update in real-time as agents complete work
- The Governance HUD displays Oracle warnings and sentinel findings
- Infinity Terminal lets you watch agent execution in a browser-based terminal
Creating Custom Agents
NXTG-Forge agents are markdown files with YAML frontmatter. See the Agent Development skill for a complete guide to creating your own.
